Hiking & Mountain Trekking

Situated in the southwest of Bulgaria, the Rila National Park covers nearly half of the Rila mountain range including its 14 highest peaks. It is the largest national park in Bulgaria with two of its four nature reserves under UNESCO protection. There are many lakes, including the marvelous cluster of the Seven Rila lakes. The park is covered with thick spruce, white fir, and Macedonian pine forests and includes rare and endangered wildlife species and self-regulating ecosystems of biological diversity. In addition there are historic sites of cultural and scientific significance such as the 10th-century Rila Monastery.

With 130 peaks above 2000m, glacial valleys and lakes the Rila Mountains seem to be a piece of the Alps thrown into the heart of the Balkans. The highest sections are in the east where the winter snow cover can exceed 2metres, here you can visit the top 10 peaks including the highest mountain in the Balkan peninsula, Mount Moussala (2925m) as well as the highest lake in the region, the Glacial lake (2709m).

Situated in the northwestern section of the Rila National Park is the small resort of Malyovista. Overlooked by the foreign tourist industry but relished for its beauty and grandeur by the Bulgarian weekend trippers throughout the summer and winter months. Malyovista is only 15km along an asphalt road from our lodge this is the start point for many marked tourist hiking trails and high-mountain rock climbing tours.
